Rei is a 14 year old girl who is one of the gifted who has the ability to pilot an EVA unit. She pilots the original and prototype unit EVA-00 but later pilots a more advanced version. Rei is a very quiet and mysterious girl and few people know something about her.

Rei seems to see herself as someone who has the responsibility to help and protect others. She lives in this tiny shaddowed appartment and only has a few stuff inside. Unlike Shinji, she doesn't hesitate and fears nothing. She follows every command of both Misato and Gendo Ikari but still manages to be as agressive as anyone else.

Rei seem to have problems with emotions. She cannot seem to relate whether she is happy or whether she is sad. She seems closest to Shinji and they seem to get along. Shinji is the only one who was able to put a smile in Rei Ayanami's face.
